In her first major address before the nation yesterday night at the Republican National Convention, Donald Trump's wife, Melania Trump, who is hoping to be US next First Lady gave a wonderful speech and many were impressed until they realized the former model plagiarized a number of lines from first lady Michelle Obama’s speech at the 2008 Democratic National Convention.

Nigerian Army is carrying out forensic audit of all its formations, operations and units according to Buratai.

Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Tukur Buratai, yesterday disclosed that the Nigerian Army is presently carrying out Forensic auditing of all its formations, units and operations in the Northeast. Buratai said this when Ugochukwu Osuagwu, Principal Partner of St Francis Xavier Solicitors paid him visit in Abuja.

He said the Army, under his command, has zero tolerance for corruption and that the wastages of the past were being corrected in line with the policy of the Buhari-led administration.

Nick Cannon leads Black Lives Matters protest outside Republican National Convention in Cleveland

Rapper and actor, Nick Cannon joined Black Lives Matters protesters outside the Republican National Convention which started in Cleveland, Ohio, on Monday and attacked both the Democratic and the Republican  parties. Nick stood in front of banners and posters calling for justice and an end to shootings of black men by police officers.

He said:
'We want to be respected. We want to feel safe. We want the American Dream.  
'You are messing with our peace of mind. We can't operate as Americans when we can't walk outside and feel safe.

The traditional ruler of the Ron/Kulere tribe of Bokkos LGA in Plateau State, His Royal Highness, Sir Lazarus Agai was murdered by suspected Fulani Herdsmen, yesterday evening Monday July 18.
According to Plateau News, the monarch was ambushed and murdered along with his bodyguards and driver on his way back home from his farm at Sha village in Bokkos.

Justice A.I Allagoa of the Federal High Court in Owerri, has affirmed the election of Governor Okezie Ikpeazu of Abia State. Former governorship aspirant, Barr. Friday Nwosu also dragged Governor Okezie Ikpeazu to court over alleged forged tax certificates. However, the court ruled today that the plaintiff, (Nwosu) was unable to prove that the tax documents where forged and dismissed the matter.

Niger Delta Avengers attacked three oil trunks in Rivers, Bayelsa State

According to a post on their website signed by their spokesperson, Mudoch Agbinibo, Militant group, Niger Delta Avengers claim they have attacked three oil trunks in Bayelsa and Rivers state. The group say they carried out the attack today July 8th at between 3am and 5am.
“At about the (hour) of 3am to 5am the Niger Delta Avengers blow up Nembe 1, 2, and 3 trunk-line in Bayelsa/River States. We still using this medium to warn the general public of impostors Facebook accounts. Niger Delta Avenger is not in Social network anymore” the statement read

Ibe Kachikwu hands over to new NNPC GMD, Maikanti Baru

Following the constitution of the new NNPC board that saw the replacement of Kachikwu as the GMD of NNPC, the Minister of state for Petroleum, Ibe Kachikwu, this morning handed over to the new Group Managing Director of NNPC, Maikanti Baru. 

Kachikwu will now assume his position as the chairman of the corporation. In his speech, Kachikwu thanked President Buhari for giving him the opportunity to serve as the Group Managing Director of the corporation. He promised to show his full support to the leadership of the new GMD. 

On his part, Baru pledged to carry on with the reforms Kachikwu had started in the corporation.

How 55-year-old foodstuff dealer was arrested with 250 cartridges

A 55 years old man has been arrested by the operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) with 250 cartridges hidden in several cartons in Benue State.

The suspect is identified as a 55-year-old foodstuff trader based in Jalingo, Taraba State who traveled regularly to Onitsha to buy food items which he sells at a market in Jalingo. He told Daily Trust that officials of the NDLEA intercepted the vehicle he was traveling in at Alaide in Gwer East Local Government Area of Benue State.

Protest erupt in Minnesota as another black man, Philando Castile was shot dead by American police in Falcon Heights

Protests erupted in Minnesota overnight after a man was fatally shot by police during a traffic stop in front of his girlfriend and a child.

The aftermath of Philando Castile's shooting in Falcon Heights was apparently captured in graphic detail on Facebook video.

Angry crowds gathered outside the governor's mansion as news spread about the death. Castile, 32, was a kitchen supervisor for the St. Paul school district.

A man has been arrested by Italian police investigating the killing of a Nigerian immigrant which the government has condemned as a racist attack.
Police say a row broke out at Fermo on Italy's west coast when racist abuse was hurled at the partner of Emmanuel Chidi Namdi, 36.

The violence escalated when a traffic pole was pulled from the ground. The victim later died in hospital.

A local man described as a well-known "ultra" football fan is being held.
Amedeo Mancini, 35, was arrested on Thursday on suspicion of racially aggravated manslaughter. His lawyer said he "did not mean to kill" and that he had punched the Nigerian in self defence.

Baghdad bombing death toll rises to 281

Following the Sunday's suicide bombing in Baghda, Iraqi officials have again raised the figure for the number of people killed terrorist attack to 281.

The health ministry said 281 were now known to have died in the attack, which targeted a shopping complex in the mainly Shia Muslim Karrada district.

The previous death toll, announced by the ministry on Tuesday, was 250.
The jihadist group Islamic State (IS) has said it was behind the bombing, the deadliest in the country since the 2003 US-led invasion.

IS militants overran large parts of northern and western Iraq two years ago, but government forces have since regained much of the territory.

Abia State Poly undergraduate flees after killing landlord

A student of the Abia State Polytechnic identified as Abel, has killed the landlord of one of the students’ lodges in the Immaculate area of Aba, Abia State.

PUNCH Metro learnt that Abel, a final year student of the Department of Architecture, allegedly stabbed the victim in the stomach during a disagreement at the lodge.

Our correspondent was told that the landlord had ordered that no female visitor was allowed to spend the night in the lodge.

Suspicious package sparks security alert at UK parliament

Part of Britain’s upper house of parliament, the House of Lords was briefly locked down today Thursday July 7th after police were called to reports of a suspect package, officials said.
The security alert, reportedly sparked by a letter sent to a peer containing white powder, lasted for an hour and a half before police declared the incident over.

“The incident has been stood down. It was a suspicious package that had been delivered to the Houses of Parliament,” a spokeswoman for the Metropolitan Police told AFP.

Lionel Messi sentenced to 21 months in jail for tax fraud

Reining FIFA world player of the year and FC Barcelona star, Lionel Messi and dad have been sentenced to 21 months jail term by Spanish court for tax related fraud. They were also slammed with a fine of 3.7 million euros ($4.1 million).

But these prison sentences are likely to be suspended as is common in Spain for first offences for non-violent crimes carrying a sentence of less than two years.

Veteran Nollywood actress, Bukky Ajayi, is dead

Respected and Veteran Nollywood actress, Bukky Ajayi, is dead. She died at the early hour of today Wednesday July 6th at the age of 82 years.

Ajayi studied drama at the Institute of Drama, London. She was part of the TV series Village Headmaster which aired in the 1980s.

The late actress has been very active in the Nigerian entertainment industry and enjoyed a career spanning over three decades.

She will be buried today according to Islamic rites, a family source has said.

As against the denials of Governor Ayodele Fayose that he never got any money from the office of the former National Security Adviser, Col. Sambo Dasuki (retd.), the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Secretary in Ekiti State, Dr.
Temitope Aluko has revealed that the governor's election was indeed funded with cash from Dasuki's office, some oil contractors and that Fayose threatened former President Goodluck Jonathan that he must deliver so that Jonathan will win in Southwest.

Aluko, who claimed that Zenith Bank did not sponsor the campaign of Governor Ayo Fayose, but only made a token donation of N200 million after he had won the governorship election.
Aluko made this disclosure during a live interview programme on ADABA 88.9 FM monitored in Ado Ekiti on Tuesday.

Gang chops off DPO’s ear during arrest in Anambra State

A nine-man gang that had been terrorising Nanka community in Orumba North Local Government Area of Anambra State were paraded by the Anambra State Police Command on Monday July 4th.

Members of the gang led by one Ifedilichukwu Nwankwo allegedly chopped off one of the ears of a Divisional Police Officer of Ajali Division (name withheld) who was at Nanka to effect their arrest.

Parading the suspects at the State Anti-Robbery Squad office at Awkuzu, Oyi Local Government Area, the State Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Ali Okechukwu, said the Nanka community had been liberated by the arrest of the gang.

Lagos Police foiled kidnap attempt on family of five

A kidnap attempt on a family of five was foiled by the Lagos State Police Command last weekend. Nine gunmen arrived the Ijon community in Ayobo Ipaja in a speed boat and stormed the home of one Oluseun Oguyemi, and attempted to kidnap the man, his wife and three children.

According to Daily Trust, the kidnap attempt was foiled by the police and the suspects subsequently arrested.

Nigerian Isaac Success becomes Watford's most expensive signing ever at £12.5million

In what appeared to be a club-record transfer fee, 20-year-old Nigerian, Isaac Success, has completed a move to premiership side Watford for £12.5million. Isaac Success was sold by Spanish side Granada after scoring six goals in 30 La Liga games last season, earning Granada's Player of the Year award. He will team up with fellow Nigerian striker Odion Ighalo at the Hornets.

Militant Group Niger Delta Avengers allegedly respond to the suspension of their Twitter Account

The Niger Delta Avengers have responded to the suspension of their twitter account in an unconfirmed post via Facebook. The account which was used to notify the public of their destruction of oil and gas installations owned by major oil corporations across the Niger Delta Area, was suspended on Monday July 4th

The leadership of the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria, PENGASSAN has instructed its members around the country to abandon their duty posts from Thursday July 7th and proceed on strike action. If this directive is sustained, another looming fuel scarcity is imminent.

In a statement signed by its acting general secretary, Lumumba Okugbawa, PENGASSAN blamed the proposed strike on the Federal Government’s inability to honor their agreement contained in a May 12, 2016 communiqué.

Following a decision of the President-General of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar III, the Sultan of Sokoto, to extend the Ramadan fast to today Tuesday July 5th due to the non-sighting of the moon, the Federal Government has extended the public holidays for the Eid-el-fitr celebration to Thursday July 7th July, 2016.

The notice of the extension was contained in a statement released today July 5th by the office of the Minister of Interior, Abdulrahman Dambazau which was signed by the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Bassey Okon Akpanyung.

The management of Skye Bank PLC yesterday announced what it called the voluntary resignation of its top officers.  The action followed plans by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to take over the bank due to distress arising from bad loans and insider malpractices by board members.
In a statement, the management said the CBN has approved the appointment of Alhaji M.K Ahmad as the new Chairman of the Board, and Tokunbo Abiru the new Group Managing Director and CEO.   Bayo Sanni, Idris Yakubu, Markie Idowu and Abimbola Izu retain their positions as Executive Directors.

Niger Delta Avengers blow up another NPDC, Chevron, NNPC facilities

Notorious militant group in the oil rich Niger Delta region, the Niger Delta Avengers on Monday night dealt another blow to the nation’s oil sector by blowing up two manifolds operated by the Nigerian Petroleum Development Company at Batan Community in Warri South West Council Area of Delta State.

Two other trunk lines belonging to the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation in the area were also destroyed by the militant group.

Also, an oil well operated by Chevron Nigeria Limited at Makaraba village of Gbaramatu Kingdom was attacked last night.

I didn’t shoot my housemaid for abandoning baby, it was accidental discharge – Kano chief

A chief in Kano State, Alhaji Jamil Bala, who allegedly shot his 35-year-old housemaid in the neck and breast, has denied the allegation, saying it was an accidental discharge.

It would be recalled that the housemaid, Mrs. Umu-l-kulsum Inuwa, was shot on her boss (Bala) for allegedly failing to attend to his wailing 3-month-old baby on time. The bullet reportedly hit one of Bala’s guards.

The incident happened in Bala’s residence in Barnawa, Kaduna State, on Saturday, when his wife went out, leaving the baby behind.

Inuwa, who is a widow and mother of three, was rushed to a private hospital where she had been admitted and the matter was reported at the Barnawa Police Division, leading to Bala’s arrest.

Police arrest teenager in connection with killing of Nigerian student in London

According to Evening Standard UK, a yet-to-be identified 15-year-old boy has been arrested by the London police in connection with the death of a Nigerian student, Fola Orebiyi, who was reportedly stabbed to death on Sunday in Notting Hill, London, by a gang of youths.

The 17-year-old was reportedly involved in a fight on a nearby estate with a gang of youths, who chased him into the busy road where he was attacked and bled to death.

In the latest development, an investigation into the murder has yielded an arrest.

Why Twitter suspended Niger Delta Avengers’ account

Twitter suspended the account of Niger Delta Avengers, yesterday, following the group’s announcement on the micro-blogging site that it had carried out five attacks on key oil installations in the last few days. 

Although Twitter does not comment on individual accounts for privacy and security reasons, a spokesman for the site said, Avengers account was suspended in line with the company’s policy, which detailed specific rule pertaining to violent threats. The rule says that “you may not make threats of violence or promote violence, including threatening or promoting terrorism.”

30-year-old man rapes neighbour’s 4-year-old son

Officers at the Aguda Divisional Police Station, Lagos State are investigating one Prince Ovivare, who allegedly defiled a neighbour’s four-year-old son (names withheld). It was gathered that the incident took place, Wednesday afternoon, when the boy returned from school. He emerged from the neighbour’s room, when his mother called him, only to reveal that the suspect “put his wee wee inside my bum bum.” 

According to the victim’s mother, “normally, my son stays in the Headteacher’s house after school, when I am not through with my work. So when we came home, I gave him food and bathed him.

Nigerian forward, Ahmed Musa set to join Leicester City in a record club transfer fee

English champions Leicester City are set to break their record transfer fee for the second time in a matter of days by buying Nigerian international attacking midfielder Ahmed Musa, his agent told the BBC on Monday.

The 23-year-old, who scored a brace for Nigeria in a 3-2 defeat of Lionel Messi's Argentina at the 2014 World Cup, will see his present side Russian outfit CSKA Moscow receive £16.6 million (S$29.7 million) - a record outlay for Leicester.

Buhari removes Kachikwu as GMD of NNPC, appoints Baru as replacement

According to a statement released this evening by the presidency, President Muhammadu Buhari has appointed Dr Maikanti Kacalla Baru as the new group managing director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), a move which signals the removal of Dr Ibe Kachikwu as the GMD of the state-owned oil corporation.

Kachikwu, however, is now the chairman, board of NNPC.

in a statement signed by his spokesman, Femi Adesina, the President also approved the composition of the Board of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), as provided for under Section 1(2) of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Act of 1997, as amended.

CBN takes over Board of Skye Bank as Chairman and MD resigns

The Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, today Monday July 4, took over the Board and management of Skye Bank Plc after the lender failed to meet the regulator’s minimum key liquidity and capital adequacy ratios. 

The CBN Governor, Godwin Emefiele, disclosed this at a press briefing, held at the CBN’s head office in Lagos. Emefiele said the apex bank had appointed a new board and management for the bank following the resignation of the Chairman, Chief Tunde Ayeni, and Management Director/Chief Executive Officer, Timothy Oguntayo.

Sen Stella Oduah denies stashing N2.5bn in domestic aide’s account

Senator representing Anambra North Senatorial District and formal Minister of Aviation, Sen. Stella Oduah, has debunked reports that Nigeria’s anti-graft agency, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, was on her trail for allegedly stashing nearly N2.5 billion in a bank account she opened using the identity of her domestic aide.
